Connecting Solar Panels to Batteries

First and foremost: NO, you cannot directly connect your solar panels to your batteries. While both operate with DC power, a Solar Charge Controller is necessary to ensure the proper flow of current from your solar panels to your batteries.

Solar panels do not provide a constant voltage, which could damage your batteries. A Charge Controller converts the incoming voltage from the panels to the correct voltage and current, ensuring the charge follows the preset charging curves. Depending on the DC voltage of your batteries and the desired number of solar panels, Victron offers a wide range of options.

PWM Controllers

The PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controller is the simplest type of Solar Charge Controller. This controller reduces the voltage from the panels to match the battery's voltage more closely. However, this comes at the cost of reduced efficiency, as the solar panel won't operate at its optimal point.

MPPT Controllers

The MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) controller is more technologically advanced than the PWM controller, resulting in higher upfront costs. This controller optimizes its input voltage to extract the maximum energy from the solar panel. It then adjusts this energy to meet the varying voltage requirements of the battery and connected equipment. When selecting the right MPPT, it is essential to consider the maximum PV voltage and current. Victron provides a simple tool to assist you, which you can find here.
